The state Department of Labor and Training has taken over the programs operated by the financially troubled Northern Rhode Island Private Industry Council, essentially putting the organization out of business. The move by the state merely confirms its actions of a few weeks ago, when upon discovering the agency’s financial problems, the Labor Department moved swiftly to disband the program and find ways to continue to service its clients.
Meanwhile, the probe of the agency by the state auditor general of a reported missing $208,000 is continuing, said Lee Arnold, director of the state Department of Training and Labor.
Ernest Almonte, state auditor general, did not return telephone calls regarding the probe.
